As part of the production and maintenance of websites, web design requires many different skills and disciplines. Web design encompasses a variety of skills and disciplines, including web graphic design, user interface design (UI design), authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software, user experience design (UX design), and search engine optimization. Although some designers will cover all aspects of the design process, many others work in teams.
As part of the broader realm of web development, web design partially overlaps with web engineering in that it involves writing markup for a website’s front-end (client-side). In addition to understanding usability, web designers are also expected to be aware of web accessibility guidelines if they create markup as part of their role. Despite its relatively recent origins, web design has a long history.
